Tax Season Information

2023 Tax Filing Season Information

Tax season is here, and we wanted to send information for the 2023 filing season (TaxYear22).

Please review these important notes:

  • March 8, 2023 – Tax source documents due to MSM Advisors
  • April 17, 2023 – IRS Tax Return due date

ALL documentation and client checklist is due by the above deadline. If information is not received (including K-1s), your tax return will be extended; we will be unable to prepare an extension payment estimate before the April deadline as well. Extensions may be subject to additional preparation fees, as well as taxes, interest, and penalties assessed by the IRS and State.

  • Complete Client ChecklistRequired for tax preparation; available here and also accessible through our website. You will need to download the checklist FIRST, complete it, save to your device, and upload with other documents to your SmartVault account.

Document preparation and submission:

Submit documentation by the deadline

  • Gather ALL documents needed for the preparation of your tax return and upload them to SmartVault. TIP! Use descriptive file names for source documents (i.e., W-2, 1099, ABC K-1, etc.)
  • Upload Client Checklist AFTER documentation has been uploaded  – Download checklist, complete, save to computer, and upload to SmartVault. Tax Return preparation will not begin until the checklist is received.

Upload documents in PDF format – DO NOT submit photo files such as png, jpeg, etc

Tax Return completion and signatures:

If you file electronically:

  • You will receive an email notification that your tax return is ready for signatures
  • Both spouses need to sign and follow instructions to submit to IRS by due date
  • Once the IRS has accepted your return, you may check the status via the IRS website in IRS Refund Status under the Client Resources tab on our website

If you file by mail:

  • Return must be signed and postmarked by IRS due date

  • Submit complete and accurate information –  This helps us prepare your return as efficiently as possible
  • Complete Client Checklist – Includes any new information required by the IRS for this filing season (see instructions for accessing checklist above); If you would like a Client Organizer to review last year’s information, please email
  • Utilize electronic filing and direct deposit for refunds – This will help in reducing delays
  • Review the IRS tax tips webpage for updates for the 2022 tax year
